S2 Ep 7 – Mary O’Connor

Vori Health: the virtual medical practice taking a biopsychosocial approach to patient care.

On today's episode of Who The Health Started That?, we're talking to Dr. Mary O'Connor, renowned orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of Vori Health, a virtual musculoskeletal medical practice that takes a biopsychosocial approach to patient care. Dr. O'Connor has spent her career in academic medicine, working at Mayo Clinic and Yale University, but she left that comfort to start something new. Why? Well, because traditional care for pain or other debilitating diagnoses can be frustrating, costly, and even unnecessary. Dr. O'Connor saw an opportunity to improve the way healthcare is delivered, and she co-founded Vori Health to do just that.

But becoming an entrepreneur wasn't an easy decision for Dr. O'Connor. She had to grapple with the fact that she wouldn't be making as much money as a highly compensated surgeon and that her new venture would take time to gain traction. However, the opportunity to make a positive impact on the healthcare system and improve patient outcomes outweighed the financial risk.

Dr. O'Connor's experience in academic medicine gave her insight into the barriers and constraints of the traditional healthcare system. She saw that the payment model rewarded procedures, imaging, and surgery, which could lead to overutilization and unnecessary treatments. To change the model, Dr. O'Connor knew that a new approach was necessary.

That's where Vori Health comes in. By taking a holistic approach to patient care and leveraging technology to provide virtual consultations, Vori Health is able to offer patients a more convenient and effective way to manage their musculoskeletal pain. Dr. O'Connor's expertise and vision have helped to build a company that is disrupting the traditional healthcare system and improving patient outcomes.
